Medicare Annual Enrollment 2026: What Every Agent Needs to Know Before October 15

July 11, 2026 · Agent on Record Editorial Team · 1 min read

The 2026 Annual Enrollment Period opens October 15 and closes December 7, with every change effective January 1, 2027. Those dates never move, and neither does the pattern: agents who prepare in August and September write clean business in volume, while agents who start on October 14 spend the season apologizing for delays.

Certifications come first

AHIP certification and carrier recertifications gate everything else. Complete AHIP as early as your carriers accept it and push scores immediately, then confirm ready-to-sell status shows in every carrier portal before October. A missing certification discovered mid-AEP means turning away your own clients while a competitor enrolls them.

Compliance is tighter, not looser

CMS marketing rules still require a Scope of Appointment before discussing plan specifics, with the 48-hour advance window and its documented exceptions, and marketing calls must be recorded where the rules apply. Third-party marketing organization disclosures remain mandatory. None of this is new for 2026, but enforcement attention keeps rising, and the agents who treat compliance as workflow rather than paperwork are the ones who never think about it again.

The September moves that pay in October

Pull your book and sort it by risk. Clients whose plans are leaving their county have guaranteed issue rights and need to hear from you first. Clients in plans with falling star ratings or shrinking benefits will read their Annual Notice of Change in late September and start calling; beat the letter with your own outreach and an offer to review.

Book your annual reviews for late October now. Your existing clients fill the calendar first, and new prospects take the remaining slots, not the reverse. Prepare a one-page summary template for plan comparisons so each appointment produces something the client can hold and show their family.

Finally, make yourself verifiable. AEP is referral season, and every referral gets searched. A professional profile with your license details answers the question before it gets asked, and it works every hour of the season while you are in appointments.
